Inspirations from Andreas Gursky

Alfredo Garcia has always been inspired by the innovative approach of the famous photographer, Andreas Gursky. Often described as "splashy" and "unbelievable", Gursky has claimed a reputation for his digitally enhanced photographs revealing grand spectacles form everyday life. Gurksy is also known for producing huge panormic color prints, some of which reach up to six feet high and ten feet long. The grand size of the images creates a sense of awe as he depicts the contemporary world as an expensive vision. Gursky depicts powerful man-made spaces such as condo facades, office lobbies and the interiors of big box retailers. As Gurksky reveals these spaces from an elevated vantage point, he allows the viewer to witness the hustle and energy of the raw urban realm from a rare and breathtaking view.

One may recognize how Garcia is heavily inspired by Gursky's interpretation of his surroundings. Garcia is also motivated by the innate richness of the contemporary world. His piece, " Pleasing her" is a beautiful indication of this theme. He embeds found object over a intricacy textured metallic surface. On the edges of the found objects are painted an orangey red, suggesting rust, a byproduct of industrialization. Yet, unlike Gursky, Garcia works with found objects and paint, impassioned by the physicality of his hands. Through his complex visual patterns, Garcia communicates his responses to everyday urban life and the social interactions which take place.

Garcia's influences are particularly shown in his piece, "Your Decepting Confusing Lines". In this work, Garcia depicts various grid patterns and small textural structures which protrude from the surface and are sprawled throughout the composition. These decorative elements are set over a healthy pinkish grey surface evoking pavement, reminiscent of city life. However, Garcia also adds his own imaginative trimmings with a couple three-dimensional mermaids, lending the scene a surreal and mythic touch.
