Alfredo Garcia: A Visionary Inspired by Nature

PRESS RELEASE

Alfredo Garcia is an emerging visual artist based in California, specializing in abstract assemblage. His work has received strong public acclaim as he has been featured in the Artist Portfolio Magazine as well as the Peripheral ARTeries Art Review Magazine on November 2013. Garcia's work is revered for his depiction of nature and organic social interactions through an approach which  he proudly refers to as "Abstract Elegance".

As a visual poet, Garcia is blessed with an affinity for looking at the world with artfully sensitive eyes.  He recognizes the innate beauty of his environment, which he expresses through visual patterns and earthly blends of color. These elements seem to map out the tone and nuances of his social experiences and connections to his surroundings. As a result, his work is essentially a perceptive symbolic response to the social interactions that activate our everyday realities.

While many critics have referred to Garcia's work as " highly moving", Garcia never intended to create art with a specific purpose or goal in mind. Nevertheless, viewers regard the exquisite  subtleties of his creations as a highly moving experience. As Garcia cautiously intertwines found materials into his painterly, hand-crafted compositions, he is able to create a sensuality and tangibility that emulates nature. Moreover, Garcia's awareness of nature's character is distinctively shown through his use of color and imagery. His trademark colors reveal an oxidized, yet muted quality, which creates a tranquil and earthly feel.  Also, his use of intricately textured surfaces and organic shapes suggest a solidarity with one's environment.

Garcia's art is deeply inspired by the renowned film, "The Count of Monte Cristo". As the film vividly captures the importance of perseverance, Garcia's embraces this value as the driving force in his work. For this reason, each piece evokes a riveting energy that is consistent with the vigor of man. Therefore, viewers are encouraged to gaze beyond his murky colors to recognize the underlying beauty of his uplifting lines and patterns.

Mapping Social Patterns in "Flash Generation" and "Loneliness"

Continuing his journey to explore social patterns in nature, Alfredo Garcia  adds two brilliant additions in his "Abstract Elegance" Series. In accordance with his renowned trademark, Garcia expresses his responses to social interactions using evocative colors and assemblage. Through these works, the viewer gains a more pronounced view into Garcia's creative mind. Moreover, each of these three pieces offers a differing examination into the intricate social workings that occur in everyday reality.

In his piece, "Loneliness", Garcia captures the sentiment of isolation and abandonment. The centralized form in this work is a golden form imbued with maze-like swirls of blues or oranges with jagged edges. This form is surrounded by a black, a bleak space damaged by the energetic cracks that run throughout the surface. These cracks are extremely irregular and forceful,  enhancing the feeling of violence and depression. This entire area is bordered by a rich olive green frame with jocund swirls embedded into the thickness of the paint. This earthly richness and serene whirly lines evoke a blissful connection with nature from which the golden form is isolated-- trapped in a field of darkness and despair.

Revealing a lighter sentiment, Garcia represents the more gleeful aspects of social interaction in his work, "Flash Generation". In this piece, Garcia showcases four culturally mainstream scenes, providing a nostalgic tableau of American social progression. The bottom two scenes carry a vintage feel, while the top left image reveals a concert, a traditionally high-spirited social occasion. Finally, the top right image depicts an ice blue cube encasing a diamond-like form, representing the complexity and dimensionality of our progressing contemporary world.

These four images are surrounded by an earthy colored background. Using his trademark approach, Garcia fills this area with muted greens touched with areas of algae reds and dusty yellows. He also adds dynamic textures with wildly free brushstrokes entrenched in the paint. Here, Garcia indicates that throughout society's social history, we have always been intrinsically wired to nature as the backbones of our existence.

Inspirations from Andreas Gursky

Alfredo Garcia has always been inspired by the innovative approach of the famous photographer, Andreas Gursky. Often described as "splashy" and "unbelievable", Gursky has claimed a reputation for his digitally enhanced photographs revealing grand spectacles form everyday life. Gurksy is also known for producing huge panormic color prints, some of which reach up to six feet high and ten feet long. The grand size of the images creates a sense of awe as he depicts the contemporary world as an expensive vision. Gursky depicts powerful man-made spaces such as condo facades, office lobbies and the interiors of big box retailers. As Gurksky reveals these spaces from an elevated vantage point, he allows the viewer to witness the hustle and energy of the raw urban realm from a rare and breathtaking view.

One may recognize how Garcia is heavily inspired by Gursky's interpretation of his surroundings. Garcia is also motivated by the innate richness of the contemporary world. His piece, " Pleasing her" is a beautiful indication of this theme. He embeds found object over a intricacy textured metallic surface. On the edges of the found objects are painted an orangey red, suggesting rust, a byproduct of industrialization. Yet, unlike Gursky, Garcia works with found objects and paint, impassioned by the physicality of his hands. Through his complex visual patterns, Garcia communicates his responses to everyday urban life and the social interactions which take place.

Garcia's influences are particularly shown in his piece, "Your Decepting Confusing Lines". In this work, Garcia depicts various grid patterns and small textural structures which protrude from the surface and are sprawled throughout the composition. These decorative elements are set over a healthy pinkish grey surface evoking pavement, reminiscent of city life. However, Garcia also adds his own imaginative trimmings with a couple three-dimensional mermaids, lending the scene a surreal and mythic touch.

A Video Presentation of my New Work

The Beauty of the Artist's Hand

In our contemporary era, we are seeing an increasing amounts of installation art, photography and digital media. As more artists are using technology and non-traditional forms of expression, art today is often less of a physical craft  and more of a product. Moreover, we are seeing more art that is less commercialized and more conceptually driven. This is because there is a greater emphasis on creating art to elicit ideas as opposed to creating home décor. With this change in approach, we lose a vital aspect of the traditional artistic methods: the humanizing touch of the artist's hand.

Alfredo Garcia's values the sincerity associated with showing evidence of his artistic process through his work. Each of his pieces have an expressive quality, revealing the energy and passion from each brush stroke or application. As a result, the viewer sees Garcia's artistic journey through the pathways of his hand. The effect is a genuine and moving.

Garcia's recent piece, "The Waves of Life", is a breathtaking reflection of this authentic approach.  He allows each brush stroke to coincide with nature's sublime grace, creating a vividly peaceful effect.  Also, his involvement his further emphasized through the ridges of paint left at the edge of each brush stroke. This unrestrained use of texture affirms the hand-painted quality of this piece.

Garcia also reveals a rich evidence of touch through the painterly approach in "Mermaid Goddess". In this piece, Garcia depicts graceful lines and textures to transmit a sense of tranquil movement. Through these rich stylistic approaches, Garcia takes his viewers through a fantastic visual experience,  reminding us that beauty in art can still be physically driven.
